Christmas Drum Ornament

Christmas Drum Ornament

I don’t know how about you, my sweet strangers, but I collect bits and pieces and leftovers of just about everything. And when I saw these paper rolls left over from ribbons, I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to make little Christmas drum ornaments out of them? It was my last-year project, but before I got to edit the video, it was the end of the year. So, I decided to leave it for this year and actually post it before Christmas 🙂

I have saved these little paper rolls from ribbons, and I think they will be perfect for this project.

Construction of the Drum Ornament

To make the drumheads, I am using vellum paper for its crisp and slightly translucent look.

Vellum Paper

I found the easiest way to stretch it, is to apply the glue on the edge of the paper roll, gently press it on the vellum, and then let it dry.

Gluing the Vellum

When the glue was dry, I cut the vellum about 1/4 inch around the paper roll. Then, I snipped the vellum all around the edge so it could be folded over easily and glued to the side of the roll with the same PVA glue. And, I repeated the process from the other side of the roll as well.

Snipping the Edges

Decorating of the Drum Ornament

This cute red suede Christmas ribbon is exactly what I was looking for in my stash, but you can use any other ribbon or design paper you like, depending on the size of your paper roll and what you have available. I cut it to size and glued it in place with my low-temperature hot glue.

Gluing the Ribbon

To trim the drum edges, you can use gold passement, rope, or another type of trim. I am sure you can find many more kinds of trims or laces in your local craft and supply stores. Maybe you can even strip some secondhand finds. Actually, I like this plastic pearl trim better, so that is what I will use now. I cut it to size and attached the mini brads to it.

Trim with Brads

Then, I glued the trim to the drum with my hot glue, having it overhang the edges ever so slightly. I glued the other trim so the brads would be off-center to the first trim because I had in mind tying them together with a golden thread.

Connecting the brads with golden thread

At the end, I decided to use the extra thread ends to tie a loop for hanging.

To finish the inner edges, I used this thicker golden thread. It is actually a metal thread, so I had to make little knots at the ends so it wouldn’t unravel. And I used a low-temperature hot glue to glue it in place.

After a short contemplation, I decided to use the ends as a little fuzzy decoration.

Decorating the edge with golden thread

One little tip. If you are using any design with text, remember you should tie the hanging loop at the top and not the bottom of the text like me. Fortunately, my OCD made me fix it.

Of course, there are many ways to decorate the little drums, but I simply chose to tie little bows from Christmas ribbons. And I added a pearl bead to one.

Decorating teh Drum Ornament with Bows

But no drum would be complete without drumsticks. Obviously, the wooden skewers were jumping at me from my kitchen drawer, so that’s what I used. But you could use Q-tips instead, which are also pretty common household things.

Making a Drum Stick

To make the round ends, I tried to use clay at first, but it was cracking and not sticking well. The hot glue worked so much better! First, I cut the drumsticks with my cutting pliers, seemingly longer than needed, so I could adjust the length later. But they still ended up being just the right size. Once I was happy with their placement, I attached them with my hot glue again.

And here they are, simple easy drum decorations for your Christmas tree.
