Wood Casket Inscription

This has been a terribly sad project. It was hard to see what I was doing through my tear-flooded eyes. Quite suddenly, I lost my incredibly sweet kitten to hydrocephalus – a brain disease. I have built him a special wood casket with an inscription.

Very suddenly, I was forced to build a little casket for my baby kitten Fluffy last week. Who left us after losing a battle with an untreatable brain condition. In his memory, I have decided to decorate the lid of the box with his name inscription… drowning the fire with my tears.

Don’t Forget the Protection

If you are wood burning, never forget a proper, good-quality respirator. I am using my Force 8 half mask with A1P2 filters… If you can smell the smoke and the vapors, the filter is not good enough for your work. You should stop burning and reconsider your protection because you could get sick. Work slowly and be patient when woodburning. Beware that the burning tip is extremely hot, so either wear proper gloves or be very careful.

For burning, I am using a simple, cheap wood burning tool from Crelando. I got it in a local grocery store on sale for about $10. It is not perfect, but it works OK for occasional hobby use. I just have to watch that the tip is screwed in tightly otherwise, the temperature drops due to bad contact. Also, I need to clean the burning tip quite often from build-up charcoal that prevents further burning.

Outlining the shape
Outlining and Filling the Shape

First, I sketched the sign on a piece of paper and then I transferred it to the wood, well plywood, to be exact. Then I started lightly outlining the shape. After that, I was slowly filling in the letters and gradually burning deeper and deeper. Until I got the desired debossed effect. Work slowly and be patient when woodburning.
